In 1888 the church building burned. Nobody ever found the cause of the fire. The building was rebuilt and enlarged and reopened the next year. The congregation held services in the Pence Opera House while reconstruction went on.
Rev. Marion D. Shutter and his wife Mary were assistants to Rev. Tuttle in 1888 when the church burned. Mary came to watch the fire and stood in the cold for so long that her cheeks became frostbitten. Her left cheek remained notably red in the succeeding years, so that she said she had "saved" on rouge over the years.
